FAQ

  • Can I take both classes?
Absolutely! We offer special bundles for anyone who would like to participate in both programs.
  • What does "Bayani Arnis" mean?
In the Filipino Tagalog language, "Bayani" translates to "Hero". Arnis is one of a few names for Filipino Martial Arts, and it comes from the old Spanish "arnes" which means "armor". This reflects the Spanish influence on both Filipino language and martial arts, because the Spanish occupied the Philippines for 400 years.
  • Can anyone join either class?
Both classes are open to the public. Karate is good for all ages, and will be taught "family style", meaning all ages are welcomed and parents can train with their kids. If there is enough interest, we may eventually offer an adults only class as well. Bayani Arnis is a style which focuses heavily on weapons, and real world applications of self defense, so it is only open for students 12 years old and older.
  • How do I register for classes?
After your first complimentary class, Ms. Holmes will discuss what options are best for you and your family, and get you registered as an official HMA member!
  • What style of Karate do you teach?
There are dozens of styles of Karate, and thousands of martial arts. Our particular style is a Korean system called "Tang Soo Do Chung Do Kwan", which is the oldest Korean Karate style. We can trace our lineage back to the "Father of modern Karate", Gichin Funakoshi.
  • Will we participate in tournaments?
HMA is still growing, and so our first priority is building our program and meeting wonderful new members. Eventually we will offer opportunities for competition. We believe that competition can be a great way to set goals for yourself, and challenge yourself outside of class. However we keep tournaments in the proper perspective. They are not the "end all, be all" of Karate training. They should simply be looked at as a fun way to add on to your martial arts experience!!
  • is my child old enough for lessons?
It depends on the child! Some children develop faster than others. Your child will need to be able to participate in an hour long class. Although the focus of the lesson will shift regularly to keep students engaged, They will need to be able to focus on one activity for at least 10-15 minutes. Additionally, one of our values is discipline, and all students are expected to follow the rules and expectations. It is a great idea for parents to take lessons with their kids. That is how the Holmes family learned martial arts, and it is a great bonding experience for parents and kids! We offer special family pricing, so try a class and see if it is right for your family!!
